A Day in the Life: Katharina Bickel

Every week we ask another person to have a look at their schedule. This week is Katharina Bickel, founder of the Munich-based startup Catlabs

As a designer by trade and cat lover by heart, Katharina founded Catlabs in 2018 to bring more harmony, quality, and style into cat homes. After studying media design (BA) and interdisciplinary media studies (MA), Katharina started a rapidly developing career in the agency world joining various Publicis Groupe subsidiaries in New York, Chicago, and Munich. After six years she switched gears to the corporate side, working as an expert in marketing, sales, e-commerce, and business development for Scout 24, Amazon, and BMW/MINI. However, somewhere along the way of being busy and successful building an international career and accomplishing much, Katharina lost her “why”. Before she even realized, her body forced her to stop. Six months in the hospital with multiple surgeries gave her time to think about how valuable her time alive really is and what she wants to use it for. Along the way of recovery, she rediscovered her essential needs as a person and the life mission she wants to dedicate her energy to. This eventually led her to combine her passion for interior design and her love for cats to create a business.

Unsatisfied with what the market had to offer, Katharina had always developed individual interior solutions for her cat, Holly, a rescue kitty from a shelter in Chicago. Katharina realized that there is growing demand for high-quality cat products and the potential for this niche market. Her main motivation with Catlabs is to make the (cat) world better by breaking through the cycle of constantly having to buy and replace aesthetically questionably and often toxic disposable pet accessories. Instead, she wants to promote mindful consumption for responsible pet owners. To achieve this she offers well-designed, natural, and sustainable solutions for the daily life with cats. As a coach and speaker, she also supports other female entrepreneurs to make their founding journey a success.
