17 and a Half Questions with Arlene Bühler

We ask inspiring people 17,5 Questions. This week we have Arlene Bühler, Head of Group IT Portfolio and Performance Management at Deutsche Bahn. Arlene is a true explorer: She thinks like a modern Odysseus and dreams of outer space. Can you guess how many countries she’s lived in?

Arlene Bühler

1. What I like about my job

I have enormous creative freedom and the opportunity to get involved with societal issues, especially with topics like sustainability and traffic shifts through digitalization.

2. What sometimes frustrates me

That major changes require a lot of time and, above all, a lot of patience.

3. My secret dream job

Astronaut, to discover and conquer new worlds.

4. Best strategy to survive a really bad day at the office

Using the Twitter running group as a motivator to go for an evening run after a busy day.

5. How I get into the flow

When the task involves fighting to find innovative solutions to complex problems, and constructively "rubbing elbows" with others in the process, working together to implement these ideas in a way that's sustainable in the long term.

6. Biggest success so far

That I've followed my childhood dream of discovering the world: that I've had the fantastic opportunity to live and work in a total of 7 different countries in Europe, Asia and North America.

7.  Biggest defeat

That I gave up on various start-up activities too quickly, instead of using the challenges to grow. And leaving Toronto too early, for one.

8. Worst buzzword

V.U.C.A, because change has always been the only constant and that's what makes life so exciting.

9.  Best reward after a hard week at work

Cooking together with my husband and our 2 daughters in a relaxed atmosphere, as we comfortably look back on the week and kick off the weekend with a good glass of wine.

10. Home office or in-house

50/50. For "strategic" discussions, personal interaction at the office with the team, and for everything else, very much home office.

11. Most important traits a colleague/business partner must have

Trust, which allows us to create a mutually appreciative working environment where everyone is on equal footing.

12. My creative hack

My personalized Deezer playlists, which I consume daily to relax and reflect, and Apple News+, a fantastically curated collection of media outlets from around the world.

13. First website to check in the morning

14. Favorite digital tool

My Apple Watch and the apps Runtastic and Strava: my weekend companions when I go for a run in nature and my pacemakers for weekly exercise.

15. The book or series from which I have learned the most for my (work) life

Homer`s Odyssey: even as a child, the idea of traveling to foreign worlds fascinated me, and this has always influenced me. I still enjoy learning about different cultures and I love traveling.

16. A series, book or podcast I can recommend to anyone

For the past few years, I've been a passionate fan of Game of Thrones, an entertaining textbook on leadership, power, status and strength of character.

17. Most prominent follower on a social media channel?

Janina Kugel on LinkedIn, an inspiring personality and a wonderful role model for me.

17 and a half: What has always...

inspired me are strong personalities who fearlessly stand up for their ideals and values. That’s why I’m happy to be continuously expanding my (digital) network with people like that.
